Giles Hellyer (1835-1910)
Mariner, Crimea Veteran and Lock keeper
The name Hellyer is Norman in origin (derived from St Hellier) and the family had lands in Devon.
The individuals considered here are the ancestors of Mary Agnes Hellyer, my great-grandmother and are descended from a James Hellyer living near Bearminster at the end of the 17th century.
William Hellyer (b 1799) and his son Giles Hellyer (b 1835), both mariners, are of particular interest.
