James, the second surviving son of James Barham, Painter-Stainer, was born in Woolwich in 1785. This is description of what we know of his early life. For other aspects of his life see the following links:
James, the second surviving son of James Barham, Painter-Stainer, was born on 21st September 1785 in Woolwich and was baptised on 23rd October according to the Woolwich Parish Register. His parents and family had moved to Woolwich from Old Street at some time between August 1779 (when a previous son James had died) and January 1791 when a daughter Susannah was born. The reason for the move is not known but the Gordon riots took place in 1780 and Old Street was at the heart of this public disorder. Both Susannah and another son John died in Woolwich the year before James' birth.
Soon after James' birth the family (parents James and Susannah, James and brother Robert) moved to Darenth in Kent where his grandfather had taken on the post of Master of the Workhouse. Two further daughters, Susannah and Mary, were born in Darenth in 1788 and 1790 respectively but Mary died just after her first birthday.
Robert and James were the only sons of James and Susannah to survive to adult life. Both followed their father into the trades of painter, plumber and glazier.
